Event Details

[Title] Regenerative Medicine and Disease Research in the Central Nervous System
[Speaker] Hideyuki Okano (Professor from Keio University)

Regenerative medicine aims to develop new treatments for diseases that currently lack effective therapies, using genes and cells. Professor Okano began with fundamental research on neural development using mammals and fruit flies, and has since contributed to the establishment of the academic field of regenerative medicine for the central nervous system. For over 20 years, he has been working on developing treatments for spinal cord injuries.

Professor Okano’s research group is conducting a clinical study targeting subacute spinal cord injuries—two to four weeks after injury—using neural stem cells derived from human iPS cells. This is attracting global attention as the first attempt of its kind. In addition, drug discovery research based on iPS cell technology is progressing, leading to the development of new medications for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), for which conventional treatments have shown limited effectiveness.

Professor Okano is one of Japan’s leading researchers in the field of regenerative medicine, particularly recognized for his achievements in developing treatments and drug discovery for neurological disorders using iPS cell technology. We warmly invite you to take advantage of this valuable seminar opportunity.
